Richard In Your Mind @ Hopetoun Hotel, Sydney

Last night Richard In Your Mind launched their brand new single, The New Sun, at the Hopetoun to a pretty packed room. This was the first time I’d managed to catch a whole gig by the band despite wanting to get out to their gigs for ages. I was pretty impressed.
Clearly Richard In Your Mind are a bit insane, but the band craft some pretty great songs drenched in psychedelic pop influences. Plus they had confetti cannons. Awesome. Fittingly enough, The New Sun was my favourite song on the night. Love that track. Richard In Your Mind sound nothing like any other band in Sydney at the moment, which is always a sign of promise. I can’t wait to hear the album which is apparently out in November.
The E.L.F. (Daz from Gerling’s side project) supported and while he was spinning/playing/sampling he seemed to confuse the crowd who were probably expecting a band rather than a laptop performance. But it was the audience who lost out as The E.L.F. filled the room with a kickass set of his own songs and his insane mashup-type mixes. At one point I heard Fatboy Slim’s Praise You, M.I.A.’s Boyz, Young M.C.’s Bust A Move, and Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi all mixed together in a three minute History of Music lesson. Impressive stuff. If Girl Talk can get crowds to go insane, it’s only a matter of time before The E.L.F. punches through.
Berkfinger and The Ex-Girlfriends opened the night but we missed a good chunk of their set. I did find Berkfinger to be oddly endearing though.
