The Mint Chicks & I Heart Hiroshima @ Gaelic Club, Sydney

Bit late with this recap which means I’ve probably forgotten most of what I wanted to say.
First up, I Heart Hiroshima. I last saw them in May 2006 supporting The Grates and I thought they were pretty cool. On Friday night I was pleasantly surprised to find that the band have gotten even better. The three piece (2 guitars and drums) manage to craft great little punk songs with really clean sounding guitars which I think takes balls. So many young bands hide poor playing behind walls of distortion but not these guys. Both guitarists have nowhere to hide with every note easily heard by the crowd. And they seldom miss a note. Great stuff. And it helps when your drummer hits the skins so hard she makes a bass player useless.

Next up were The Mint Chicks from New Zealand (and is it just me or is New Zealand pumping out a ton of great bands at the moment?). I am fully prepared to file The Mint Chicks into “Not My Thing” category. Others LOVED them but I just never got into their stuff (bar one song which was pretty sweet). They do put on one hell of a show though with every band member beating the crap out of their instruments and lead singer Kody Nielsen destroying mic cables all night long (although he needs to study Dennis Lyxzén a wee bit more to polish his mic swinging).
Next up: Dylan on Wednesday!
