The Paper Scissors @ Ruby Rabbit, Sydney

Last night The Paper Scissors kicked off the first Bel-Air party in Darlinghurst. It’s a small miracle the gig even happened as the original venue (Sol’s Deck Bar) had their locks changed and For Lease signs put up…without any notice. So organizers managed to get the gig moved down the road to Ruby Rabbit and by all accounts, this did not hurt the turnout. The place was PACKED.
I unfortunately missed Cloud Control who were on first, but I saw them a couple weeks back opening for The Basics so I wasn’t too too troubled. Next up were The Holidays who I saw at the SClub Xmas Party in December. Maybe it was just me but they seemed even better tonight. The band were tight, their bass player kicks ass and they had the crowd singing along…even though they’ve never released a thing; obviously a great sign. Expect to hear a LOT more from this band in 2007.
The Paper Scissors then took the stage and previewed some songs which I assume will be released on their upcoming album (hopefully to be released in June). They seem a bit out of step with a lot of other bands in this city (saxophone!) but that just makes them stand out even more. A great blend of funk and rock they had the crowd absolutely charged during set closer We Don’t Walk. They even stretched it out into a megalong jam with the bass threatening to shake the lightbulbs from the ceiling. FUN TIMES. They will be releasing a new video (I think for Vaudevile King) next month. Look out for it.
Watch We Don’t Walk here. Ummm, some weird ass YouTube Chin Version of the video here. Check ‘em out on MySpace.
I should add that Anna Lunoe’s DJ sets were fantastic as well. Bowie, TV on the Radio, Os Mutantes…best DJ in Sydney. Why can’t all DJs be this good?

And tangentially related to the above, The Basics have confirmed their tri-state residency in April that I sort of mentioned a couple weeks ago (thanks to Geoff for the head’s up!). I can’t tell you how stoked I am for this…I’m tempted to go all four nights here in Sydney. They are THAT good. The Basics will be making the Hopetoun home on Tuesday nights (April 3, April 10, April 17, April 24). All dates at their MySpace.
If you like Joy Division and/or bootlegs…you may like this. I’ve had that bookmarked for ages and kept meaning to post it here. Enjoy.
And finally, I’ve added one of those annoying security features on the comments. I got tired of deleting the spam from my moderation queue. I know how annoying they are but hopefully all the commentors will continue to comment away. And thanks to all that do.

The Holidays were awesome..those boys need to write some more songs! I wanted more last night. They remind me of The Strokes a little.
and yes Anna did a great set. Fun night!

anna kicked arse eh!
that os mutantes song ‘Minha Menina’, was actually a cover by The Bees (i know this cause i just learnt to play it on baby guitar).
con-incidentally, TPS are the main support for the Bees sydney show. yay!

fuck…now i remember it sounding different to os mutantes’ version. i think at the time i thought maybe it was just the acoustics in the venue…still a great song though!
