Dappled Cities Fly @ Hopetoun Hotel, Sydney

My bi-monthly Dappled Cities Fly show took place at the Hopetoun last night as the Dappled boys played their closing night of a two night stand in Surry Hills. Tonight was Granddance night and the band played the entirety of the new record in order with the exception of the two best songs off A Smile which were played midset as a sort of intermission. They closed the night with a two song encore including the unreleased Cramps (which was apparently scrapped during the Granddance sessions…presumably because it sounds more like the first record) and crowd favourite Peach. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen the Hoey so full…or so bloody hot. As always the Dappled boys were affable on stage and despite the fact that I’ve now seen them about eight times, I still had a great time.

What made the night even better were the stellar support acts. I’d been wanting to see Belles Will Ring for a while now and finally got the chance last night. The five-piece from the Blue Mountains filled the packed room with music perfect for hot sunny days. What struck me most were the harmonies struck by lead singer Liam Judson and guitarist Aidan Roberts – Beatlesesque? Their psychedelic folk songs were coloured with the distinctive sounds of a 12 string Rickenbacker which instantly evoke the late 60s. Great great stuff. And how awesome was the duel guitar solo during an epic Mad Love? Download their Mad Love EP for free from here.
Local kids The Small Hours were up first and while they may be quite young they show a ton of promise. Their set was pretty solid all the way through and they even chucked in a timely Lou Reed cover (Andy’s Chest). FBi is currently playing the hell out of Arks which you can download below. The band will be at the Hoey again on Wednesday the 24th so head on out and support ‘em.

Great set, and I can’t remember the Hoey being that hot either.
I’ll have to look out for you at more Sydney shows.
