25 for 2006: Two
Album #2: Return to Cookie Mountain by TV on the Radio

So very predictable. Sure it’s been on everybody’s year end list but you know what? That’s because this record kicks ass and takes names. It’s funky, it’s atmospheric, it’s extremely well-produced, it rocks etc. The best part about this record is that whenever I listen to it I still hear something new in the songs. It might be a bit of sax here, a synth there, but it never stops being interesting. I’ll still be listening to this one lots in 2007.
Song #2: Cymbal Rush by Thom Yorke
What gets me about this song is the ending: “There were 10 in the bed, and the little one said, ‘roll over.’ I think it’s a perfect way to end a record. Other than that I think it’s the melody of this song that does it for me.

Cymbal Rush was always the song that did it for me off The Eraser….
Brilliant on Rollins too.

Cymbal Rush is amazing–a great album closer, among other things. What gets ME about this song is the repeating motif of blips that underlies the melody. Sometimes it fits the musical line, sometimes it doesn’t, but it seems to organize the song somehow. And for reasons I don’t understand, it’s just so beautiful.

I feel really ignorant for not realizing that “There were 10 in the bed, and the little one said, ‘roll over.’” were the last lyrics. Thom sometimes has the tendency to just blur vocals together, he’s never been great with diction. Lyrics yes, diction, not so much…So I just assumed it was all “ahhhhh’s”. Lol. Great song, great album. Love your blog, btw…

Well, Honey, I didn’t realize it either until I heard some of the live versions.
