Charlotte Gainsbourg’s 5:55

How good is the Charlotte Gainsbourg album? Music by Air. Lyrics by Jarvis Cocker. Neil Hannon helps out on a couple songs. Beck’s father arranged the strings. Tony Allen, Fela Kuti collaborator, is behind the drums. Nigel Godrich produced and mixed the record. That’s how good it is. I think it will appeal most to Air fans…and really it’s the best album Air have done since their score for The Virgin Suicides. Charlotte’s hushed vocals complement the music created by the Air duo perfectly and to top it off, she’s singing words written by one of the finest lyricists of the past 20 years in Jarvis Cocker. When listening to the album you can’t help but hear characteristic Jarvis-phrasing in the way Charlotte sings his words. I just wish the album had a tad more variety. That said, if you’re into Air (like I am) and want a great evening album, definitely check out 5:55.

Good Weather For Airstrikes has a longer write-up and a couple more mp3s
And in addition to this album, Charlotte Gainsbourg also stars in my most anticipated movie of the year, The Science of Sleep, which also stars Gael Garcia Bernal and was written/directed by visionary Michel Gondry.
