Happy In Rainbows Day!

It was one year ago today that we all heard In Rainbows for the first time. From the announcement by Jonny on October 1 to the day the download went live on October 10, the music industry and the internet kind of went a little Radiohead-crazy. It was a truly memorable time to be a Radiohead fan. I still remember reading the announcement of the album…my heart was literally racing. What were they doing? I can hear it when? WTF? It was wonderful.
To top it all off, the record turned out to be an amazing album. One year later and it probably sits third in my Radiohead Album Countdown (OKC and Kid A being #1 and #2, respectively). My reactions were somewhat reflected here on A Reminder:
#1: Excitement and total bewilderment
#2: Documenting the reaction on the net
#3: First listen
#4: Thoughts on the album
It was an amazing time. Happy In Rainbows Day!
Somewhat coincidentally, Radiohead have just wrapped up their 2008 In Rainbows tour this week after six shows in Japan. The band actually busted out a few surprises for the Japanese. Fog got its tour debut, Cymbal Rush featured Jonny and Colin accompanying Thom, In Limbo got its second run, and EIIRP featured intros of True Love Waits, Bjork’s Unravel and REM’s The One I Love. But perhaps most surprisingly, the band played Blow Out for the first time since 1997. In fact, it was the final song played on the entire In Rainbows tour. Random.
I was lucky enough to see two shows, in Vancouver and Seattle. The band were great both nights and I’m already trying to figure out when I can see them again. Perhaps next year?
The band have just been confirmed to play Mexico City (for the first time in about 15 years) on March 15, 16, 17. The band are also going to be heading to South America (likely Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and/or Peru) for the first time ever. Since Coachella has been moved forward a touch, it’s not entirely inconceivable that the band will play that festival (a big pay cheque will likely fund the trip to South America).
I’ve not heard any rumours about Australia. I’m positive the Big Day Out organizers pursued the band but I’ve got a bad feeling that the band are giving Australia a miss this time around. But keep your fingers crossed they decide to head this year after South America.
Here are some of my favourite live moments from the tour this year.
