25 for 2011: Twenty Five

Album #25: Nine Types Of Light by TV on the Radio
Nine Types Of Light proves that even when TV on the Radio are not firing on all cylinders they still make enjoyable albums. Despite being really poorly sequenced and lacking any totally killer track, Light showcases the band’s immaculate production and adventurous arrangements. The album’s mid-section featuring No Future Shock, Killer Crane, and Will Do lift the rest of the record by showcasing the band’s energy, unabashedly beautiful songwriting, and pop sensibilities respectively.

Song #25: Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye
This song was a pretty massive hit in my second homeland Australia this year and it’s easy to see why: the subtly perfect pop arrangement, the surprising female voice, the lyrics everyone could relate to. Apparently Wally de Backer still wasn’t sure about this song even as it rose up the charts but, come on Wally, you knew when you wrote that it at least had the potential to be a hit, right? Also, naked video.

Ohhh, 2 I agree with!
Looking forward to the rest of your list!
Been a massive year of music!
Wally says he had trouble finishing this song, until he finally had Kimbra do her bit of it, and it worked. He tried to finish it with his partner, but says it didn’t work.
I think the angst is perfect.
Of course, with the saturation of this song here in Aus, I have seem Wally refer to this song as Something That He Used To Love…..still, it’s amazing!
