25 for 2008: Nine

Album #9: At Mount Zoomer by Wolf Parade
While not a patch on Apologies To The Queen Mary (which was my favourite record of 2005), Wolf Parade’s At Mount Zoomer is still a pretty damn good record. The highs of Zoomer are tremendous: Dan’s Language City and Soldier’s Grin along with Spencer’s California Dreamer are some of the finest songs Wolf Parade have yet recorded. And while the closing Kissing The Beehive sticks around a few minutes too long, it still manages to exemplify what a lethal pairing Dan and Spencer can be.

Song #9: More News From Nowhere by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
2008 was the year Nick Cave and I finally got acquainted. After my first listen to Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! I was pretty much floored and its closing track, More News From Nowhere, had a lot to do with it. Long, wordy, with just the right amount of swing and swagger, More News opened my eyes to the weird, wonderful world of Nick Cave.

I think there is a very good chance this album finishes higher on my list.
