City Rain on City Streets

While I’ve been here in Australia I’ve been able to keep up with the music scene from Vancouver (and Canada) thanks to CBC Radio 3′s AMAZING podcast (I also stole that awesome CanRock logo above from their site) and the hard work of the Canadian music bloggers, especially my friend Quinn who does From Blown Speakers. While not all the following artists are particularly new, I just felt like giving a bunch of Vancouver/Canadian bands some more exposure to my 3 readers down here.
Small Sins (formerly known as The Ladies and Gentlemen)
The bio on Small Sins label’s site, Boompa reads as follows:
Like Grandaddy and The Postal Service, electronic elements dominate Small Sins, but despite the presence of myriad keyboards, electronic effects, and drum machines, the organic feel of the new album is never compromised. Small Sins doesn’t show off, as it takes the more subtle approach; it might sound simplistic and bare in production upon first listen, but dig a little deeper, and you’ll find each song is skillfully arranged to achieve a rich texture of background instrumentation, surrounded by honest and complex lyrics.

Also on the Boompa label, Leeroy Stagger came to my attention because Quinn is really into him. And since Quinn has great taste it was not surprising that I too enjoy Stagger’s blend of rock, country, and punk. I think this guy will be getting lots more attention in the future.

While we’re talking about bands Quinn won’t shut up about, Ladyhawk are a Vancouver band who are about to be getting a LOT more exposure. Their new self-titled album on Jagjaguwar (the home of Okkervil River and fellow Vancouver bands Black Mountain and Pink Mountaintops…of which more later) will be released on 06.06.06. If that’s not rawk, I don’t know what is. (Boards of Canada also release an EP entitled Trans Canada Highway that day as well…) Anyway, enough yammering, check out Ladyhawk NOW.

Pink Mountaintops and Black Mountain
Two bands…sort of. Stephen McBean leads both these Vancouver bands through different terrain in the modern rock wilderness. Much of the music in both bands hearkens back to the 70s for me. In a good way. Is that how you spell hearken?

Sure every other blogger has written about this band lately but I’m never one to shy from a bandwagon that doesn’t suck. TSHDT? signed to Kill Rock Stars (home of Deerhoof, Xiu Xiu, and The Decemberists before they jumped ship) who who have recently released their album, Boo Hoo Hoo Hoo. I’m still not sure where I stand with this band actually. It’s a bit weird, which I don’t mind, but I find myself not in the mood to listen all that often. Perhaps I just need to give the album more time.

OK, I’ll stop there. I was going to post a couple Constantines songs…maybe later.
In other Canadian music news, Morrissey hates Canada.
And finally, Dan filled me/us in on the details for the Liars show in Sydney. The show will be kicking off a new “club” night called Rebel Rebel at Home. Shout Out Louds will be opening and the night promises to be one to remember. Tickets are $44.
